The effectivenessof Hibiscus sabdariffa in thetreatment of hypertension: A systematicreview

المستخلص : a b s t r a c t Introduction: Hypertensionisacommonglobalhealthproblemwithsignificantmortalityand morbidity. Hibiscussabdariffa is aplantknowninmanycountriesandisconsumedashotandcold drinksInadditiontoitsuseinfolkmedicine;ithasbeensuggestedastreatmentformanyconditions includinghypertension. Objectives: The objectivesofthisreviewweretoexaminetheevidenceofeffectivenessandsafetyof hibiscusinthetreatmentofhypertension. Methods: Wesearchedseveralmedicaldatabases(MEDLINE,EMBASE,CINAHL,CochraneCentral RegisterofControlledTrials,andthespecializedregisteroftheCochraneHypertensionGroupandthe generalengineGoogle)toJanuary2009. WeincludedrandomizedcontrolledtrialsthathadexaminedHibiscus’seffectivenessandsafetyin the treatmentofprimaryhypertensioninadults.Twoauthorsindependentlyselectedthetrialsforthe review,extractedthedata,andcriticallyappraisedtheincludedstudies. Results: Four trials,withatotalof390patients,metourinclusioncriteria.Twostudiescompared Hibiscussabdariffa to blacktea;onestudycomparedittocaptoprilandonetolisinopril.Thestudies foundthatHibiscushadgreaterbloodpressurereductionthanteabutlessthantheACE-inhibitors. However,allstudies,exceptone,wereshorttermandofpoorqualitywithaJadadscoringof o3 anddid not meetinternationalstandards. Conclusion: The fourrandomizedcontrolledstudiesidentifiedinthisreviewdonotprovidereliable evidencetosupportrecommending Hibiscussabdariffa for thetreatmentofprimaryhypertensionin adults.
