Professor Philip Calder visits KAU

Vice President for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, Professor Adnan Zahed, received at his office on Tuesday 20th August 2014 Professor Philip Calder, Professor of Nutritional Immunology at the University of Southampton, UK.

The visit was part of a programme aimed at attracting international highly-cited  scientists in the drive to make King Abdulaziz University (KAU) a world class centre of research and learning.

During his visit, Professor Calder gave a number of lectures and shared his expertise with KAU faculty and students.

Professor Calder was appointed to a personal Chair in Nutritional Immunology in 2002. His research focuses on understanding the influence of dietary fatty acids on aspects on cell function and human health, in particular in relation to cardiovascular disease, inflammation and immunity. He has been awarded the Sir David Cuthbertson Medal by the UK Nutrition Society (1995), the Belgian Danone Institute Chair (2004), the Nutricia International Award (2007), the ESPEN Cuthbertson Lecture (2008), the New Zealand Nutrition Society’s Muriel Bell Award (2009), the Louisiana State University Chancellor’s Award in Neuroscience and Medicine (2011) and the German Society for Fat Research’s Normann Medal (2012). Professor Calder has over 400 research publications (excluding abstracts) and is listed on isiHighlyCited. He has served on various committees and expert panels. He served for seven years as Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Nutrition and is currently an Associate Editor of Clinical Science and of Lipids. He is a member of the several other Editorial Boards. Professor Calder is a Fellow of the Society for Biology and of the Association for Nutrition.

The purpose of the visit, according to Professor Zahed, was in tune with KAU's policy of seeking to provide a high-quality education and taking advantage of the capacity and expertise of other local and foreign universities and scientists.
